RESUMO:

This work stems from the life experience and trajectory of the author, José Aparecido Macedo, with decades of experience in ecological restoration in the Southwest region of Mato Grosso, especially in headwaters upstream of the Northern Pantanal. Its objectives are to: document and analyze the actions of the aforementioned author as a restoration agent, emphasizing his applied practices and knowledge, developed and refined in the ecological restoration process in the Rio Vermelho (Rio do Sangue) sub-basin, in the municipality of Araputanga-MT, during decades of restoration work. The work is based on a perspective of resistance, grounded in the constancy of planting native trees, which represents a hope for a better environmental future capable of transforming degraded areas into living, resilient, and functionally integrated ecosystems. It is highlighted that ecological restoration, as understood here, is characterized not only by plant recomposition but also by the recovery of ecosystem services, such as water infiltration into the soil, evapotranspiration regulation, water recharge, and the maintenance of the hydrological cycle. The study is part of the Jauru River hydrographic basin, which covers twelve municipalities in the southwest region of Mato Grosso and integrates the Jauru River Water Resources Planning and Management Unit (UPG-P1). The research adopts a qualitative approach, using an Experience Report (ER) as a methodology to address the author's history with restoration. For the construction of the report, a detailed timeline was elaborated, covering 30 years of experience, from the author's arrival in Mato Grosso, his difficulties, environmental perceptions, first actions, successes, significant encounters, and the results achieved. Data analysis was based on content analysis, focusing on learning from acquired experiences and their socio-environmental impacts on the region. The experience gained as a family farmer was important for the first steps in ecological restoration to be taken early in 1983, in Reserva do Cabaçal-MT. The restlessness and search for knowledge led the author to seek training, thereby increasing his know-how and network of partners, thus allowing him to expand his work in the region. This expansion has led to the author's experience now extending throughout the entire southwest region of MT, through various partnerships with public entities and non-governmental organizations. It should be noted here that research of this nature highlights the importance of environmental restoration initiatives based on traditional knowledge and interaction with local ecosystems, valuing the protagonism of communities and social agents in the recovery of degraded areas. The report presented here reaffirms how the author has become a reference in planting as a fundamental act to improve degraded areas and positively intervene in the water cycle. Restored vegetation is essential to prevent silting and ensure water functionality, improve general environmental conditions, and upon establishment, attract fauna and flora, favor ecological succession, and transform the ecosystem into a water producer. The work of José Aparecido Macedo, with his combination of local knowledge, experience acquired throughout his journey and daily practice, as well as his academic background, combined with the perseverance in believing that the quality of Nature provides a better quality of life, has become a valuable model of how participatory ecological restoration can contribute to reducing environmental impacts caused by deforestation, contributing to the resilience of ecosystems and the sustainability of territories.
