RESUMO:
Urbanization exerts significant impacts on fluvial systems, altering hydrological dynamics, habitat structures, and the capacity of watercourses to provide essential ecosystem services. In urban areas, these changes are often summarized by the Urban Stream Syndrome, characterized by intensified surface runoff, loss of fluvial connectivity, degradation of riparian vegetation, and reduction in aquatic biodiversity. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the environmental integrity of urban streams in Tangará da Serra – MT and their Permanent Preservation Areas, supporting actions for sustainable urban planning, environmental recovery, and environmental education. The research was conducted across six urban sub-basins (Estaca, Figueira, Araputanga, Mutum, Buritis, and São Pedro) belonging to the Sepotuba River basin. Initially, a morphometric characterization of the sub-basins was performed using digital elevation models and geoprocessing in a GIS environment, covering indices of shape, compactness, fluvial order, and drainage density. The evaluation of the ecological integrity of the watercourses was conducted through the Habitat Diversity Rapid Assessment Protocol (ARDH), applied to three sections of each stream (headwater, middle course, and mouth), in addition to measuring physicochemical water parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and oxidation-reduction potential. The results revealed high environmental heterogeneity among the sub-basins and along the longitudinal gradient of the streams, with a predominance of sections classified as natural in the headwaters and a higher degree of alteration or impact in the middle courses, associated with intensified urbanization. The Estaca and Figueira sub-basins showed the best levels of environmental integrity, while the São Pedro stream presented the most critical scenario, characterized as an urban drainage channel with no functional flow during the evaluated period, reflecting the almost total suppression of its natural characteristics. In general, the results indicate a strong relationship between land use and occupation patterns, sub-basin morphometry, and the ecological condition of urban streams. It is concluded that the integrated application of morphometric indicators, rapid environmental assessment protocols, and water quality parameters constitutes an efficient tool for the environmental diagnosis of urban streams, providing technical support for prioritizing areas for conservation and recovery, as well as strengthening public policies aimed at the sustainable management of urban water resources.
