RESUMO:

Water is vital for human survival as well as for agriculture. In rural areas of Mato Grosso, ensuring water security is a challenge, even though it is known as the birthplace of the three largest river basins in Brazil. In order to safeguard water security, with the purpose of improving a water supply source, what are viable low-cost strategies for collection and storage, ensuring quality and quantity, both for potable and non-potable use? Rainwater collection and storage emerges as a viable alternative, especially with low-cost strategies. This study aims to identify and analyze actions, systems, models and project references related to low-cost technologies, easy to maintain and install, that guarantee water in quantity and quality, ensuring water security and improving coexistence with periods of scarcity. To this end, a bibliographic survey and analysis of projects from the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) were carried out. The study identified models of low-cost collection and storage systems, with potential for application in rural areas of Mato Grosso. INCRA has already installed more than 65 projects, demonstrating the technical and economic viability of this alternative. Vinyl cistern systems were the most widely used by INCRA, as an experiment to observe user adherence, with storage capacities ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 liters. The use of rainwater is a viable way to ensure water security and water quality in rural areas of Mato Grosso, as long as it is properly monitored and supervised. This study resulted in the preparation of a technical note, informative and guidance material on the low-cost systems studied here, presenting their different purposes for the public, considering the specific characteristics of the location used. The results can be used by farmers, rural communities, government agencies, academics, NGOs and other audiences, in order to implement low-cost rainwater collection and storage systems. Considering each case to employ the best arrangement should be essential for the success of projects involving social technologies for the use of rainwater.
