RESUMO:

This study presents a didactic strategy proposal for the teaching and learning of functions in the 1st year of high school, based on the Problem-Solving methodology and the use of Educational Cards as an instructional resource. The research emerged from the observation that many students show difficulties in interpreting problems and associating the concept of function with its practical applications, which compromises their performance in subsequent mathematical topics. The proposal was implemented in two 1st-year high school classes in 2025 at Escola Estadual José Domingos Fraga, located in the municipality of Sorriso, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Initially, a pre-test was administered to assess students’ prior knowledge of functions acquired in the 9th grade. Subsequently, a didactic sequence was designed and applied using Educational Cards and formative tasks with the GeoGebra software, aiming to stimulate logical reasoning, active participation, and content contextualization. After the intervention, a post-test was conducted to compare results and evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted methodology. The research also included a satisfaction survey and a qualitative analysis based on students’ feedback and observations. The results suggest that the use of Educational Cards, combined with Problem-Solving strategies, promotes more meaningful and participatory learning, fostering the development of mathematical thinking and a better understanding of the properties and applications of functions. It is concluded that playful and interactive strategies contribute to overcoming conceptual difficulties and increasing students’ engagement and autonomy in the mathematical learning process.
