RESUMO:

This research aims to reflect on the literacy process during classes taught in English, in a first-year elementary school class at a bilingual school located in the city of Sinop-MT. The study aims to investigate and report how those children's reading and writing are characterized, in addition, to identifying how mediation occurs and what the teacher's role is in the process. Concepts of balanced literacy and the gradual release of responsibility model are addressed in order to establish a connection with the zones of development. Authors such as Vygotsky (1998), Soares (2021, 2022) and Megale (2020), among others, supported the research and allowed a dialogue with the data generated in the classroom. The methodology used is classified as ethnographic, due to its observational nature and participation of the researcher in the field. The data were generated through image records of activities, audio recording of moments of interaction in the classroom and a field diary. Through the information gathered, we can see the importance of teacher mediation for students to advance in their learning and development. With regard to reading and writing, it was possible to verify how each child used their linguistic repertoire during the activities, a fact that highlights the individuality of the bilingual subject in relation to communicating and expressing themselves and opens doors for a dialogue about translanguaging.
