RESUMO:

Presented to the Postgraduate Program in Letters (PPGLetras) at the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT), Sinop campus, the research "Forms and Formulas in Popular Cultures - Serious Content in Playful Rhythms," currently in the Qualification phase for Master's Thesis Defense, takes forms and formulas, especially nursery rhymes, as a privileged corpus for observation and analysis. It starts from the premise that the verbal forms and formulas of popular cultures, through playful language, address difficult content related to social life and existential dilemmas. The general objective was to develop a critical study of nursery rhymes, prioritizing the strata underlying the formal structure; the specific objectives are: to present popular cultures as an open system of knowledge accumulated by generations; to present forms and formulas of oral literature; and to emphasize nursery rhymes and their social and existential themes. This is a qualitative research study, supported by bibliographic review, literary analysis, and verification of concepts involving popular culture, oral literature, especially the nursery rhyme genre. In its course, the research explores the concept of popular culture and the concept of oral literature, making specific connections with literature and literary theory; then, the research presents forms and formulas of popular cultures, and finally, highlights the set of nursery rhymes, showing their function as a social game of memory, rhythm, and play. In the theoretical framework, some works are fundamental: Questions of Literature and Aesthetics (1993) and Popular Culture in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (1993), by Mikhail Bakhtin; Popular Culture in the Modern Age (2010), by Peter Burke; Oral Literature in Brazil (1984), by Luís da Câmara Cascudo; Cultural Theory and Popular Culture (2015), by John Storey; Nursery Rhymes, Folklore Richness (1987), by Jakeline Heylen; Simple Forms (1976), by André Jolles; Introduction to Popular Cultures in Brazil (2013), by Otávio Zucon and Geslline Giovana Braga; Orality and Cultural Memory (2015), by Mônica Zucon and José Luiz Braga; The Letter and the Voice (1993), by Paul Zumthor; in addition to other works that will be consulted during the investigation. At the end of the research, it is considered that popular cultures continue their journey in societies, updating knowledge and giving rise to others.
