RESUMO:

The Brazilian Deaf community uses Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS), and this is no different in Sinop, Mato Grosso, or in other municipalities in the state. In this regard, this study seeks to understand how linguistic variations in LIBRAS positively contribute to the richness of the language through the use of different variants. This study adopts a qualitative-quantitative methodological approach, as its theoretical framework is Variational Sociolinguistics, with a focus on linguistic and varietal contacts resulting from migration. The lexical variations produced by 16 deaf individuals from the Sinop Association of the Deaf (ASSINOP) will be analyzed, including both those born in Sinop and migrants currently residing there. Furthermore, video recordings are being made during data collection to facilitate a more fruitful and meaningful analysis. The theoretical framework draws on the work of both deaf and hearing researchers: Labov ([1972] 2008), Quadros (2004), Espíndola (2018), Segala (2021), Machado (2023), Coelho et al. (2023), among others. This is a groundbreaking study, as no research has yet been conducted on Variational Sociolinguistics of Libras in the Sinop context; it is worth noting that Sinop possesses a linguistic variety linked to the migration of Deaf people from different states in Brazil, as well as from other municipalities in Mato Grosso to this city. These individuals, in their pursuit of social advancement through opportunities for professional and academic growth, bring variants from their regions of origin to the municipality of Sinop, Mato Grosso. Thus, the linguistic analysis of the variants used here is fundamental for recognizing sociolinguistic studies of Libras in Sinop, regarding the socialized variants of deaf migrants from other regions of Brazil and also from other municipalities in Mato Grosso, compared to those of deaf individuals who are long-time residents of Sinop, documenting the exchange of linguistic variants and their use within the deaf community. The preliminary results confirm the presence of lexical variation through the analysis of Libras’ linguistic parameters based on the signs performed by the participants, both the migrant Deaf individuals, who brought variants from their hometowns, and the long-time resident Deaf individuals, who socialize the Sinop-MT variants with the migrants. This has thus allowed us to conduct a comparative study of the variants, both those brought by the migration of the first deaf individuals—some of whom are now elderly—and those used by young deaf people, who follow the evolution of Libras resulting from this pioneering work, through in-person contact or technology. In addition, Deaf people of different ages, each with their own unique characteristics—some finding it easier, others viewing the use of linguistic variation in Libras as a challenge—interact linguistically, adding even more value to the Libras used by different groups of Deaf signers in Sinop.
