Space as Power in the Fiction of Agnaldo Rodrigues da Silva within the Context of Brazilian Literature Produced in Mato Grosso
Mato Grosso literature. Contemporary short story. Space. Agnaldo Rodrigues
This study aims to investigate the common elements related to space as an imagistic power
and literary space in the narratives of the writer and researcher from Mato Grosso, Agnaldo
Rodrigues da Silva. The research focuses on the category of space and how it is conceived
and represented in the author's narratives, taking as its main theoretical reference the theory of
space developed by Gaston Bachelard in The Poetics of Space (2008). In this work, Bachelard
proposes a philosophical and phenomenological reflection on intimate and imagined spaces,
valuing their affective, symbolic, and poetic dimensions, rather than a merely objective or
architectural approach. The research corpus consists, more specifically, of the works A
Penumbra (2004) and Mente Insana (2008), from which the configurations of narrative space
and their implications in the aesthetic and symbolic construction of the short stories will be
analyzed. Throughout the study, we seek to highlight the role of space as a structuring element
of the narratives, as well as to give visibility to the literary production of Agnaldo Rodrigues
da Silva. The research also presents a brief overview of Brazilian literature produced in Mato
Grosso, highlighting contemporary writers who work in the field of fiction, situating the
author's work within the regional literary context. In addition, aspects of his biography, his
short story collections, and his contribution to Mato Grosso literature are addressed.
The analysis of the selected short stories is investigative and interpretive in nature, aiming at
understanding space as an aesthetic and symbolic category, as well as disseminating the
author's literary production. As theoretical support, in addition to Bachelard (2008), the
studies of Candido (2000–2004), Gotlib (2004), Freud (1914), Halbwachs (1990), among
others, are mobilized.
