RESUMO:

This dissertation presents an investigation into the literary and cultural expressions produced in settlement communities in the municipality of Alto Paraguai, located in the state of Mato Grosso, with a focus on oral narratives, including poems, performances, myths, and legends. The research is grounded in theories and praxis related to culture, history, identity, memory, and trauma, engaging with the complexities of subalternity to which these communities have been subjected throughout social history and which, consequently, has rendered their cultural productions marginal and often invisible. However, this scholarly work joins others that recognize these productions as legitimate artistic and literary forms, endowed with aesthetic and political effects, capable of recovering, preserving, and reworking collective experiences. The study is organized around three axes: social memory; life in settlement communities; and the interpretation of myths, legends, and other narratives from the popular imagination. The formation of settlements in the municipality is closely linked to the consolidation of urban space; therefore, historicizing the former requires attention to the latter. Within the urban context, the dissertation highlights the traumatic legacy of mining, migration, labor exploitation, and social transformations. In the rural context, it examines oral practices such as prayers, folk rituals (sympathies), siriri dance, and poetic inventions, understood as forms of resistance and cultural and identity affirmation. Regarding oral literature, the circulation of these expressions outside the canon demonstrates that memory is not preserved solely in archives and written documents, but also within social praxis, through rituals, collective performances, and community projects. This study shows that these practices reconfigure the boundaries of what is recognized as literature, while simultaneously giving symbolic form to suffering, belonging, and survival. As its theoretical framework, this study draws on the ideas of Ricoeur (2007), Halbwachs (2013), Blanchot (1987; 1997), Bergson (2006), Shellhorse (2005), Candido (2000; 2023), among others.
