RESUMO:

This research investigates Eduardo Mahon's novelistic production based on the formulation of the poetic category of disenchantment, understood as an aesthetic and existential principle that organizes the configuration of the narratives and the singularity of the characters. The study is based on the hypothesis that the novels published by the author between 2014 and 2022 articulate rationality, the body, death, and void-language as structuring axes of a writing marked by the precarization of experience, the exhaustion of symbolic mediations, and the instability of contemporary subjectivity. The novels analyzed were O cambista (2014), O fantástico encontro de Paul Zimmermann (2016), O homem binário e outras memórias da senhora Bertha Kowalski (2017), Alegria (2018), A gente era obrigado a ser feliz (2019), Mea culpa (2020), O homem do país que não existe (2022) e O imprevisto (2022). The research adopts a hermeneutic and comparative approach, grounded in the immanent reading of the novels and in their articulation with frameworks from literary theory, philosophy, and recent criticism. The theoretical part mobilizes primarily Max Weber's reflections on the disenchantment of the world and modern rationalization; Walter Benjamin on the crisis of experience; Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer on instrumental rationality; Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben regarding the apparatuses of control and management of life; Maurice Blanchot in his formulations on language and death; Florencia Garramuño on the aesthetics of remains and incompleteness; in addition to the critical contributions of Antonio Candido and Alfredo Bosi on the relationship between literary form and historical reality. The analysis demonstrates that disenchantment in Eduardo Mahon's novels moves beyond the condition of a recurring theme and converts into a formal procedure, which traverses the organization of the narrative, the constitution of the characters, and the functioning of language. Rationality appears associated with subjects marked by an excessive consciousness, unable to transform lucidity into existential stability. The body emerges as a territory of wear, surveillance, and vulnerability; death manifests as a constant presence that reorganizes the relationship with time, memory, and identity; language is constructed from fragments, interruptions, and opacities that evidence the limits of the human. It was also observes the elaboration of a writing marked by aesthetic negativity, which manifests in the formal incorporation of fragmentation, opacity, and the impossibility of fully stabilizing experience, as well as in the fragmentation of the self and the precariousness of the relations among subject, language, and the world, thereby converting disenchantment into narrative matter. In this sense, Eduardo Mahon's fiction constitutes one of the significant expressions of contemporary Brazilian literature, critically engaging with the dilemmas of contemporary society. The novels articulate rationalization, the body, death, and language in a poetics that formalizes the exhaustion of modern promises of meaning and the constitutive instability of the subject.
