RESUMO: This dissertation investigates the representations of urban space in contemporary short fiction, taking as its corpus the short stories “Ligados com o Mundo”, by Gabriel de Mattos, published in A Geringonça (2007); “Nós por Nós”, “Estômago”, and “Três Silvas”, by Wuldson Marcelo, collected in Se Quer Que Algo Tenha Fim, Não Se Cale (2024); “Cuiabá”, by Divanize Carbonieri, included in the collection Passagem Estreita (2019); and “Ilhas Sobrevoam a Terra Ratchada”, by Santiago Santos, published in Baguncinha (2022). The research is based on the understanding that urban space goes beyond the condition of a mere narrative setting, actively participating in the construction of meaning, in the characters’ experiences, and in the relationships established between literature and society. As an analytical approach, the study examines different configurations of the city represented in the selected narratives, encompassing portrayals related to memory and urban transformations, social inequalities, processes of marginalization, subjective crises, and dystopian projections. The study is grounded primarily in Brandão’s (2013) reflections on literary space, articulated with the contributions of Cortázar (2006) on short fiction, Harvey (2004, 2014) on space and social relations, Tonkiss (2000) on urban experience, Candido (2000), Castells (1983), Park (1967), Oliveira (2017), and Gotlib (2006), among other scholars who discuss the relationships between literature, city, and society. Through the analysis of the selected works, the research seeks to understand how literature constructs different images of the city, highlighting urban space as a place of memory, conflict, belonging, exclusion, subjectivity, and meaning-making. In this way, the dissertation aims to contribute to studies on literature and urban space, expanding reflections on the multiple ways in which urban experience is represented in contemporary short fiction.
