RESUMO:

This thesis investigates the construction of the diasporic representation in Afro-Brazilian women’s literature, taking the crossing as a central unifying axis of experiences of memory, identity, and subjectivity in Úrsula (1859), by Maria Firmina dos Reis, and Um defeito de cor (2006), by Ana Maria Gonçalves. Although written at distinct historical moments, both novels deploy their characters and narrative strategies to foster dialogues around the legacies of enslavement, Atlantic crossings and the processes of identity formation that shape the Black experience. Grounded in the theoretical framework of the Black Atlantic and engaging with studies on diaspora, identity, memory, representation and subjectivity, the research shifts the analytical focus from Black characters as objects of representation to their emergence as subjects endowed with voice, memory and agency. Along this path, the nautical metaphor “from the hold to the prow” serves as the thesis’s central organizational motif, using the hold, hull, rudder, keel, and prow as evocative images that articulate different dimensions of literary and diasporic experience, ranging from silencing and subalternization to critical consciousness, re-existence, and the affirmation of subjectivity. Thus, the analysis demonstrates how the narratives of Firmina and Gonçalves reconfigure experiences of violence, displacement, and rupture through literary forms that inscribe memory, resistance, and identity within the characters' bodies and the narrative texture itself. By juxtaposing works produced across different centuries, this thesis proposes a reading of Black women’s literature as a site for contesting representations and generating alternative possibilities of existence, wherein characters transition from mere objects of discourse to fully realized subjects of their own histories.
