RESUMO:

This study aimed to investigate the reception of two micro-stories and one short story from the book Como pássaros no céu de Aruanda (2020), by author Paty Wolff, among a third-year high school class at a public school located in the municipality of Comodoro, Mato Grosso. In this regard, we analyzed the reception and effects of Afro-Brazilian youth literature produced in Mato Grosso, in order to observe whether students, based on their reading of the fictional texts, construct critical analyses and reflections on Black identity and its representation in literary works. From a theoretical perspective, the study draws on authors such as Candido (2023), Petit (2009), and Todorov (2009), who view literature as a cultural practice essential to human development; Jauss (1994, 1996, 2002, 2003), Cosson (2022) and Paulino (2021), among others, who discuss a teaching approach focused on Reception Aesthetics and Literary Literacy; Nascimento (2016); Sousa (1983), Cagneti (2013); Pinheiro (2023); Evaristo (2020) and Spivak (2010), who advocate for and give visibility to historically silenced voices; and Cortázar (2006) and Piglia (2004), who reflect on the characteristics of the short story. In addition, we took into account the legal framework provided by Law No. 10,639/2003, which mandates the teaching of content related to Afro-Brazilian history and culture, as well as Law No. 11,645/2008, which also includes Indigenous history and culture as mandatory content in the school curriculum. Methodologically, the research is characterized as participatory and, in this sense, was developed based on the literary reception of the selected texts and the creation of poems inspired by the readings, which culminated in the production of a cardboard book, crafted by the participants, as a way to materialize the process of reading and literary creation. Regarding the results obtained, this study initially highlighted the students’ lack of reading habits, which led to limitations in their reading development. Despite this, the reception of Wolff’s texts contributed to fostering reflections on Black identity, representation, and memory. These reflections emerged gradually and were facilitated by the teachers’ guidance, becoming particularly evident during the discussion groups held throughout the study. This process also materialized in the original poems written by the students, thereby demonstrating that the implementation of this research contributed to the development of sensitive and critical readers, aware of the fact that Brazilian literature is composed of a diversity of voices and experiences.
