RESUMO:

Biology education has undergone significant transformations over the past few decades. Initially characterized by a neutral and unquestioning approach, it has evolved to emphasize practical activities centered around the scientific method, valuing students' prior knowledge and fostering interdisciplinary connections. Contemporary education, as outlined in the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), advocates for a comprehensive understanding of the 'phenomenon of life.' Within this context, the elective component of Natural Sciences emerges, integrating all aspects of biology teaching. This study proposes the development of a handbook to support this elective component, presenting and discussing biological topics such as astrobiology, environmental science, and agricultural biology. The aim is to foster student agency, stimulate curiosity about natural science, and contribute to the construction of knowledge, developing skills essential for self-regulation and autonomy. The topics were suggested by first-year students of Professor João Batista State School in Tangará da Serra, who in 2022 began the "New High School" reform. Following the selection and discussion of these topics, a Gamified Investigative Didactic Sequence (SDGI) will be developed entitled "Universe, an infinity of possibilities," and two Investigative Didactic Sequences (SDIs): "Environment! Where is it?" and "Mato Grosso Agro: from grain and meat production, through environmental degradation, to sustainability in our daily lives." The implementation of these didactic sequences in a public school has demonstrated their effectiveness in promoting student engagement and the construction of meaningful knowledge. The active participation of students in defining the topics and developing the activities was crucial to the project's success.
