RESUMO:

Composting is a process that enables the reduction of organic solid waste in nature, as it is a practice that aims to mitigate environmental impacts. Educational proposals focused on recycling and reusing waste can effectively influence students' behavioral relationships, both at school and in their daily lives. Given this context, this project's main objective was to raise students' awareness about the importance of composting organic solid waste from school kitchens, through the application of Investigative Didactic Sequences (IDSs). Initially, a survey of students' prior knowledge about organic solid waste was carried out through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire. After that, the IDSs were applied. In the first stage, investigative research was carried out to solve a problem situation, and then the students carried out research on composting. Next, another investigative questionnaire was applied on the production of leachate. The students suggested several hypotheses that were debated in discussion groups and, after presenting the bibliographic research, were revisited in groups. Soon after, four compost bins were set up by the students at the school and fed with organic solid waste from the school kitchen for four weeks. The slurry formed in the compost bins was used for an experimental proposal to evaluate its efficiency as a biofertilizer. For this purpose, 15 plastic pots (three for each group of students and three control pots) filled with soil from the garden were used. Each group planted five broadleaf arugula seeds (Eruca sativa) per pot in quadruplicate. The students applied different doses of slurry (0, 5, 10 and 20%) to evaluate root length, leaf size, number of leaves and green mass weight. After the applications and harvest, the students tabulated and analyzed the data using descriptive statistics. It was found that the roots developed better with concentrations of 5% and 10% of the solution. Leaf growth was more significant with treatments of 20% and 10%. The number of leaves was higher with 5% treatment, while the biomass showed better results with 10% treatment. This experiment demonstrates the effectiveness of composting leachate in different concentrations, highlighting the importance of composting as a sustainable and educational practice, in addition to providing a situation for investigation and problem-solving, making the student the protagonist of their learning. The results obtained in this work provided the basis for the construction of a didactic booklet on the use of composting in school gardens in investigative teaching proposals, which can be replicated in the teaching of Science and Biology.
