RESUMO:

The field of Natural Sciences, particularly within Biology education, offers broad opportunities for the application of active methodologies and inquiry-based teaching, enabling students to play a leading role in the construction of knowledge. Among the topics addressed in Biology, Genetics is considered one of the most challenging to understand due to its abstract nature from the students’ perspective.

In order to facilitate the understanding of genetics, an investigative didactic sequence was developed using the game Playing with Genes: Exploring Probabilities and Mendel’s Laws Interactively. The proposed didactic sequence was designed for third-year high school classes and consisted of five 50-minute lessons addressing heredity and Mendel’s First Law through three interconnected modules. Initially, students reflected on family similarities and constructed basic genetic concepts; subsequently, they investigated human heredity and studied Mendel’s experiments; finally, they presented results, discussed dominance and recessiveness, and consolidated learning through an educational game.

The game, designed in a double-helix format and organized into different levels of difficulty, challenged students to solve problems with the support of hints, formulate hypotheses, and apply Mendel’s Laws. Groups providing the most consistent answers were recognized. As a result of the investigative didactic sequence, it was observed that students were able to organize concepts and formulate hypotheses effectively. Furthermore, the educational game promoted interaction among students, discussion, collaborative development of answers, achievement of correct and meaningful responses, and reinforcement of content review.
