RESUMO:

The teaching of Biology related to medicinal plants has historically not been given due relevance in basic education, for several reasons that will be discussed in this study. Among these, the absence of this topic in school curricula is particularly noteworthy; without the proposal of a specific pedagogical approach, the content is often neglected throughout students’ educational trajectory. In general, the teaching of Botany, with an emphasis on medicinal plants, has been predominantly based on traditional lectures and the memorization of concepts, which highlights the need for adopting new pedagogical strategies that make the subject more engaging and meaningful for learners. In this context, the present study aimed to develop an Investigative Didactic Sequence (IDS) on the theme “Medicinal Plants,” in which students assumed a central role by conducting inquiries into different species of medicinal plants. To achieve this, presentation tools such as Canva and PowerPoint were employed, enabling students to create pedagogical materials to be later shared with classmates and the school community. Students’ knowledge of the subject was assessed before and after the implementation of the IDS through group discussions and diagnostic and final questionnaires. The project was carried out in Biology classes with second-year evening high school students at Escola Estadual 12 de Abril, located in Terra Nova do Norte – MT. The investigative approach was grounded in the knowledge and use of medicinal plants in folk medicine, involving both students and their families. The integration of popular knowledge with scientific knowledge enriches the learning experience and strengthens students’ connection with local culture.
