Arboviruses in Focus: Biology Education for Prevention and ControlActive methodologies. Arboviruses. Interdisciplinarity. Health.
ABSTRACT
Health in the school environment is an essential element for the comprehensive development of students, encompassing dimensions that go beyond academic achievement and include the promotion of physical, mental, and social well-being. However, coordination between the health and education sectors still faces challenges, particularly with regard to the effective integration of practices and the establishment of shared objectives among the different stakeholders involved. Within the scope of the School Health Program (Programa Saúde na Escola – PSE), the perceptions of educators and health professionals regarding interdisciplinarity indicate that, despite observed advances, limitations remain related to intersectoral communication and the adoption of methodologies that encourage active student participation. In this context, the present study aimed to promote public awareness of the importance of vector control, encouraging the adoption of preventive practices focused on eliminating Aedes aegypti breeding sites, with the goal of reducing the spread of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. To this end, approaches based on the One Health concept were employed through interdisciplinary actions integrating education, health, and the environment, combined with the use of active teaching and learning methodologies. The results showed increased student engagement in the proposed activities, expanded knowledge about arboviruses, and strengthened perceptions of collective responsibility in vector control. In addition, closer interaction between schools, health services, and the community was observed, fostering knowledge exchange and the development of preventive practices adapted to the local context. As an outcome of this work, an arbovirus case monitoring application was developed, indicating that intersectoral integration and the use of active methodologies contribute significantly to the effectiveness of PSE actions, reinforcing the school as a strategic space for health promotion and for the development of critical and preventive attitudes toward public health challenges.
