RESUMO:

Essential oils (EOs) are allelochemicals derived from plant secondary metabolites, widely used for their insecticidal, antimicrobial, pharmaceutical, and other commercial applications. This dissertation was undertaken to evaluate the insecticidal potential of the essential oils of Piper arboreum and Piper fuligineum for controlling caterpillars of the genus Spodoptera, which are major pests in soybean cultivation. The work is divided into two chapters, addressing different routes of exposure (contact and ingestion) of insects to the essential oils. In the first chapter, contact exposure to 4% (v/v) of P. arboreum and P. fuligineum oils proved most effective, yielding over 86.7% mortality in S. frugiperda and performance equivalent to a commercial insecticide against S. cosmioides. In S. eridania, P. arboreum stood out for high lethality even at 0.25%, indicating this species’ greater sensitivity to its oil. In the second chapter, via ingestion, P. arboreum oil achieved 90% mortality in S. eridania at 0.25%, while P. fuligineum reached up to 86.7% in S. frugiperda at 4%. Overall, P. arboreum emerged as the most promising extract, especially for controlling S. eridania, the most susceptible pest. Both oils also induced sublethal effects—delayed larval development, reduced pupal weight, and necrotic lesion formation—reinforcing their potential as versatile, sustainable biopesticides for integrated pest management in soybean cultivation. The results indicate that the essential oils of P. arboreum and P. fuligineum hold great promise as biopesticides for soybean pest control and could be incorporated into integrated management strategies for Spodoptera spp. Given the demonstrated efficacy, further research is recommended to develop efficient commercial formulations.
