RESUMO:

Bean cultivation plays a fundamental role in food security, especially in rainfed systems, where production is strongly influenced by climatic conditions. In the state of Mato Grosso, the distribution of production and the variability of rainfall are determining factors for crop performance. In this context, the present work aimed to characterize rainfed bean production in the state, analyze the rainfall regime and the climatological water balance in representative municipalities, as well as evaluate the effects of water deficit and propose management strategies. For the characterization of production, data from the Municipal Agricultural Production of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics were used, covering the period from 2015 to 2024, allowing the identification of spatial patterns of the crop. The analysis of the rainfall regime was carried out based on data from the ERA5-Land dataset, covering the period from 1970 to 2025, with an estimate of the climatological water balance for the municipalities of Sorriso, Primavera do Leste, and Nova Ubiratã. Additionally, an experiment was conducted in a protected environment in the municipality of Tangará da Serra (MT), in a randomized block design, in a 3 × 3 factorial scheme, evaluating three levels of water availability (25, 50 and 100% of the soil water retention capacity) and three proline concentrations (0, 5 and 10 mmol L-1). The results showed that bean production in the state is concentrated in specific production centers and is more associated with variations in cultivated area than with changes in productivity. From a climatic point of view, high interannual variability in rainfall was observed, with well-defined dry and rainy seasons, which can directly influence crop performance. The water balance indicated that there are no significant restrictions for sowing in the first crop, while, in the second crop, anticipating planting is an important strategy to reduce the risks associated with water deficit. It was found that water deficit promoted significant reductions in the morphological variables of common beans, with more intense effects under severe stress, while foliar application of proline did not show effectiveness in mitigating these effects. It is concluded that bean production in rainfed systems in Mato Grosso is strongly conditioned by structural and climatic factors, especially water availability. Management strategies, such as adequate planning of the sowing season, are fundamental for productive stability, while the use of exogenous proline, under the evaluated conditions, does not prove to be an efficient alternative. These results provide support for agricultural planning and decision-making, contributing to the strengthening of production and food security.
