RESUMO:

Cotton plays a strategic role in the agribusiness of Mato Grosso, where productive intensification and climate instability make supplemental irrigation essential for the crop. Given the need to improve water management strategies, this dissertation aimed to comprehensively analyze the dynamics of water use in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivation in the state, integrating the territorial expansion of irrigation, the experimental calibration of water demand, and the thermohydric dynamics of the soil profile. In Article I, the spatiotemporal evolution of center pivot systems between 2000 and 2022 was analyzed using geospatial data from ANA and MapBiomas in the QGIS software. An expansion from 13,286 ha to 166,133 ha in the irrigated area was observed, concentrated primarily in the intermediate regions of Sinop and Rondonópolis, over basins such as the Upper Teles Pires and Upper Rio das Mortes, and within the Cerrado biome. This evidences a connection with production hubs and highlights the need for the regionalization of FAO-56 parameters. In Article II, water consumption (ETc), crop coefficients (Kc and dual Kc), and yield components were quantified in high-precision weighing lysimeters under three soil textures (sandy, clayey, and very clayey) in Tangará da Serra, MT. The results demonstrated that soil texture alters evaporative demand and plant morphology; the sandy soil exhibited the highest seed cotton yield (4,518.0 kg ha⁻¹), whereas the very clayey soil presented high vegetative vigor and lower yield (3,414.0 kg ha⁻¹), and the clayey soil showed a lower leaf area index and a reduction in Kc (0.98). In Article III, the microclimate of the soil profile was analyzed by evaluating temperature (10 to 40 cm) and volumetric water content (0 to 40 cm) under the same textures. It was verified that depth and canopy cover dampen heat flux, with moisture acting as the primary regulator of thermal amplitude through an exponential decay. The 20–40 cm layer in the clayey and very clayey soils exhibited thermohydric stability, whereas the sandy soil displayed greater superficial thermal vulnerability and rapid drainage. The results indicate that the integration of regionalized Kc values, zoning of textural classes, and management practices that favor root system deepening can contribute to greater water use efficiency, better utilization of edaphic resources, and the maintenance of high levels of yield and fiber quality.
