RESUMO:

Since 2009, Brazil has been one of the largest consumer markets for pesticides in the world. Recent studies indicate that the annual exposure rate has already surpassed the 7.3L/inhabitant mark; in Mato Grosso, the amount exceeds 45L/inhabitant, and in some municipalities, the rates can reach a frightening 600L/inhabitant. The problems extend to the incorrect use of pesticides, especially in family farming, which generally lacks technical assistance. The general objective of this study is to survey knowledge and practices regarding the use of pesticides by small producers in Tangará da Serra, and the possible risks of contamination for rural workers, consumers, and the environment. Thirty producers from a community located in the municipality of Tangará da Serra/MT participated in the study between March and September 2023, in an interview with open and closed questions. The management of pesticides and the possible risks arising from this management were evaluated. The data were analyzed using Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and relative frequencies, performed using Excel and R software version 4.2.1 (R Core Team, 2022), with 5% significance, and the graphs constructed with the ggplot2 package (Wickham, 2016). Of the interviewees, 89.47% use pesticides, namely cypermethrin (7.14%), imidacloprid, methyl parathion, abamectin, deltamethrin (14.28%) each and the most used, glyphosate (42.85%). Significant errors in the handling and application of the products were observed in addition to low adherence to PPE, as well as acute and chronic symptoms in this community. The analysis of the data from the present study shows that a large part of the interviewees use pesticides, without even knowing their active ingredient and their implications for worker health, food safety and the environment. Perhaps due to low education, no support from free technical assistance and inspection. The work was divided into two chapters: Pesticides and the impacts on the occupational health of small producers and Environmental impacts and food safety due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides by small producers.
