RESUMO:

The state of Mato Grosso leads the consumption of pesticides in Brazil. The effects of agrochemicals on the environment are quite aggressive and threaten biodiversity and the integrity of natural systems. The objective of this study was to determine the quantities and classes of environmental hazard of pesticides consumed in Mato Grosso compared to national consumption from 2010 to 2022 and to discuss their potential risk to ecosystems. The use of pesticides has grown significantly over the study years, with Mato Grosso being the state that consumes the most, especially in municipalities located in the Amazon-Cerrado transition region, some close to conservation units and indigenous lands. The most used pesticides belong to the herbicide class, with glyphosate accounting for one-third of the active ingredients marketed in the country and the state. More than half of the pesticides used in Mato Grosso belong to environmental hazard class II (very hazardous). This excessive use of hazardous substances poses potential risks to humans and environment. Our results highlight the importance of solutions to mitigate this problem, fostering the sustainability and environmental and economic viability of agricultural activities in the country and the state. One of our main recommendations is the adoption of a public policy that includes a national plan to replace traditional agrochemicals, many already banned in other countries, with more effective and less polluting technological alternatives for combating crop pests and diseases.
