RESUMO:

Enteroparasitic infections remain among the most frequent infectious diseases affecting Indigenous populations in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso, reflecting longstanding conditions of social inequality, limited access to basic sanitation and safe water, as well as environmental and territorial factors. Within this context, this thesis is composed of four scientific articles that, in a complementary manner, analyze the occurrence of enteroparasitic infections in Indigenous populations, with particular focus on the Bororo, Guató, and Chiquitano ethnic groups located in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. The first article presents a literature review on enteroparasitic infections among Indigenous peoples in Brazil, aiming to systematize the existing scientific knowledge on the subject. The results reveal a high prevalence of these infections among different ethnic groups and regions of the country, as well as a wide diversity of enteroparasitic species. The study also identified important gaps in the scientific literature, highlighting that only a portion of Brazilian Indigenous ethnic groups has been investigated. This finding reveals significant epidemiological invisibility of these populations and limits a broader understanding of the problem at the national level. The second article deepens the analysis within a regional context by investigating the occurrence of enteroparasites among the Bororo and Guató ethnic groups in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. Laboratory results indicated high positivity for parasitic infections, with a predominance of intestinal protozoa and higher frequency among children and adolescents. The analysis also revealed differences in prevalence between the studied ethnic groups and pointed to the influence of factors such as limited access to basic sanitation, the use of well or river water, and vulnerable socioeconomic conditions, elements that favor the persistence of enteroparasitic transmission. The third article broadens the discussion by analyzing the socio-environmental impacts of fires in the Pantanal on the Indigenous peoples of the region. Although it does not directly address the prevalence of enteroparasites, this study contributes to understanding the ecological and territorial context in which these health issues occur. The results indicate that extreme environmental events, such as large-scale wildfires, affect the availability of natural resources, water quality, and the subsistence conditions of communities, potentially intensifying sanitary vulnerabilities and increasing the risk of exposure to different infectious diseases. The fourth article integrates laboratory data and socio-environmental information to analyze the relationship between sanitary conditions, water supply, and the occurrence of enteroparasites among three ethnic groups in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. The results demonstrate high prevalence and associations with factors such as the absence or precariousness of sanitary facilities, the use of untreated water, and environmental exposure to potentially contaminated sources. Taken together, the four studies demonstrate that enteroparasitic infections in Indigenous populations cannot be understood solely as a health issue, but rather as the result of interactions among environmental conditions, structural inequalities, and territorial transformations. The articulation of literature review, epidemiological investigation, environmental changes, and socio-environmental analysis enables a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of these infections among Indigenous populations. Thus, this thesis contributes to expanding knowledge on enteroparasitic infections among Indigenous peoples and reinforces the need for intersectoral public policies that simultaneously consider health, environment, and living conditions for the prevention and control of these diseases.
