RESUMO:

The vegetation of the Pantanal is influenced by its species composition, with plants originating from the Cerrado, Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes. A mosaic of savanna and forest formations, consisting of cerrados, cerrados, fields and floodplain forests, which requires special attention, given its fragility and growing threat from new trends in economic development. The Paraguay River, the main river forming the Pantanal, in its portion between the city center of Cáceres and the Taiamã Ecological Station, presents environmental heterogeneity, caused by different hydrogeomorphological characteristics, translated into its compartmentalization into three functional sectors: meandering, rectilinear and transitional, whose vegetation has been little studied. In order to understand the tree diversity distributed along the functional sectors of the Paraguay River, permanent plots were installed in six areas, arranged perpendicularly to the right and left banks of the Paraguay River. In the entire sampled area totaling six hectares, 3847 individuals were recorded, distributed in 42 families and 95 botanical species. The diametric structure of the sampling sites presented the “inverted J” pattern. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’) and Pielou equability (J’) in the functional sectors were: ME (Left meander) H’ 1.94 and J’ 0.58; MD (Right meander) H’ 2.06 and J’ 0.58; RE (Left rectilinear) H’ 3.00 and J’ 0.72; RD (Right rectilinear) 1.48 and J’ 0.50; TE (Left transition) H’ 3.05 and J’ 0.74; TD H’ 2.01 and J’ 0.63. The species that contributed the most to VI in the following sectors were: in ME Zygia cauliflora (72.63%, Fabaceae); in MD Sapium obovatum (66.85%, Euphorbiaceae); Combretum leprosum (48.20%, Combretaceae); in RD Zygia cauliflora (88.85%, Fabaceae); in TE Unonopsis lindmanii (33.38%, Annonaceae); in TD Zygia cauliflora (71.57%, Fabaceae). The results demonstrated that species richness is strongly influenced by Cerrado species in the sectors (ME, RE and TE) on the left bank of the Paraguay River and on the right bank (MD, RD and TD) by species more common to flooded areas, with adaptation to the flood pulse, as a consequence of the geomorphological inclination of the river in the East-West direction.
