Brazil harbors the greatest richness of chiropterans in the world, supported by its wide diversity of ecosystems, which sustain more than 186 recorded species. Bats provide important ecosystem services, including the control of invertebrate and small vertebrate populations, seed dispersal, and pollination. This diversity is particularly high in ecotonal regions, such as the municipality of Cáceres, Mato Grosso, located at the interface of the Amazon, Cerrado, and Pantanal biomes. However, urbanization acts as an ecological filter, favoring generalist species tolerant to environmental disturbances, while more sensitive species tend to disappear, promoting biotic homogenization.

In this study, we evaluated the structure of bat assemblages in urban and peri-urban areas of Cáceres from taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic perspectives. We tested the hypothesis that urbanization promotes the replacement of species typical of natural habitats by species adapted to urban environments, while peri-urban areas act as transitional zones, maintaining greater heterogeneity and closer similarity to natural ecosystems. Urban and peri-urban fragments were selected, along with control areas in the three biomes. Bats were sampled between January and October 2025 using mist nets installed along flight corridors, followed by the collection of functional trait data. Environmental variables related to land cover and vegetation structure were obtained through remote sensing at multiple spatial scales.

A total of 677 individuals belonging to 35 species were captured, with Artibeus planirostris predominating in urban and peri-urban environments, whereas Carollia perspicillata and Platyrrhinus lineatus were more abundant in natural biomes. Community composition differed among environments, with lower beta diversity and stronger dominance by a few species in urban areas. Taxonomic and functional analyses revealed separation between urban/peri-urban areas and natural biomes, mainly associated with turnover and the replacement of specialized species by larger-bodied, generalist species with greater flight capacity. Variables related to urbanization and vegetation structure influenced assemblage composition, particularly at broader spatial scales.

The results indicate that urbanization promotes ecological filtering and biotic homogenization, whereas peri-urban environments maintain intermediate characteristics and greater environmental heterogeneity. Despite the tendency toward reduced taxonomic diversity in urban areas, functional and phylogenetic dimensions remained relatively stable, suggesting replacement among ecologically similar species. Thus, the maintenance of urban and peri-urban green fragments is essential for conserving bat diversity and the associated ecosystem services in urbanized landscapes.
