RESUMO:

Hydrological connectivity refers to water-mediated interactions in ecosystems, encompassing the exchange of nutrients and biodiversity between water bodies and landscape units such as rivers, lakes, floodplains, and groundwater reserves. The Chacororé and Sinhá Mariana bay system in the Pantanal is known for its complexity, influenced by geomorphology and hydrological interactions. This study aimed to characterize the structure and functionality of this system. The work included field expeditions over the course of a year in the Cuiabá River and around the bays, during periods of high water, low water, and dry season. Measurements of depth, water velocity, and channel width were taken to calculate discharge, as well as collection of water samples for laboratory analysis of limnological variables and of the aquatic macrophyte (Eichhornia crassipes) for chemical analysis. The results identified three types of natural channels: permanent, intermittent, and interrupted by human actions. During the flood, 17 channels drained water into the bays (15 from the Cuiabá River and two from the Mutum Stream); of these, 6 are permanent, 10 are intermittent and 2 are interrupted (barred). With the seasonal transition in the region, the channels narrow and change the direction of the water flow. The landscape of the study area was classified into 6 classes: Anthropogenic Area, Permanently Flooded Area, Periodically Floodable Area, Grassland Formation, Savannah Formation and Water Bodies. This classification provided a holistic view of the system, demonstrating how each element of the landscape fulfills its ecological role. The concentrations of total nitrogen and orthophosphate showed significant differences, mainly in the BC - SM and CM - SM pairs of sites. Regarding the hydrological conditions, the comparisons revealed significant differences in the orthophosphate concentrations between the flood and ebb phases, while for nitrogen the differences occurred only during the flood. The principal component analysis (PCA) explained 74.37% of the variance of the analyzed data. The results demonstrated that the hydrological connectivity of the Chacororé and Sinhá Mariana bay system is strongly influenced by natural factors and human interventions.
