BIRD COMMUNITY DYNAMICS IN WETLANDS: A STUDY IN THE CHACORORÉ – SINHÁ MARIANA BAY SYSTEM, PANTANAL MATO-GROSSENSE.
Bird commmunity; biodiversity; Wetland conservation
This study primarily aims to investigate the dynamics of the bird community in the Chacororé-Sinhá Mariana Bay System, located in the Mato Grosso Pantanal, analyzing species composition, abundance, and seasonal variation throughout a complete hydrological cycle, including flood, drought, rising water, and receding water periods. The research highlights the fundamental role of the Bay System in maintaining biodiversity, serving as critical habitat for resident, migratory, and threatened bird species, including emblematic species such as the jabiru stork (Jabiru mycteria), wood stork (Mycteria americana), and hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus). The work is structured into three main chapters. The first conducts a comprehensive literature review on the avifauna associated with the Bay System, consolidating existing knowledge and identifying research gaps. The second chapter presents a detailed survey of bird diversity, with quantitative data on richness, abundance, and seasonal distribution, revealing ecological patterns influenced by flood pulses. The third chapter reports on mixed nesting sites of Phaetusa simplex, Rynchops niger, and Charadrius collaris, emphasizing these birds' dependence on hydrological conditions and the risks associated with environmental changes. The results demonstrate that the receding water and drought periods concentrate the greatest bird diversity and abundance due to increased habitat and food resource availability. Furthermore, the presence of rare and migratory species reinforces the ecological relevance of the Chacororé-Sinhá Mariana Bay System. However, threats such as climate change, hydrological alterations (dams, siltation, deforestation), and the expansion of agricultural activities pose significant risks to the conservation of this ecosystem. This work not only expands our understanding of avian ecology in the Pantanal but also provides support for practical actions aimed at preserving this unique local heritage.
