RESUMO:

Research on the woody component is generally directed towards species with arboreal or arboreal-shrub habit as one, not differentiating them, which makes the shrub component a group that is little addressed, since some species, when developing, have some particularities, allowing them to present more than one habit. Biomass estimates for this stratum are also scarce for the same reasons mentioned above. Therefore, this work aimed to carry out a phytosociological survey and estimate the aerial biomass of the woody component at the Serra das Araras Ecological Station, Porto Estrela, Mato Grosso. For this, we used the inclusion level of diameter ≥ 3 cm of individuals with a height of 1 m to ≤ 3 m, in a total of 52 plots of 10x10m, 26 in cerrado sensu stricto and 26 in cerradão. To estimate biomass, we used equations from Rezende et al. (2006) for the cerrado sensu stricto and by Chave et al. (2014) for the cerradão. After identifying the specimens, we defined the habits of these species according to their morphological characteristics and information found in some references. We recorded a total of 889 specimens, belonging to 24 botanical families, 40 genera and 51 species, being that Anacardium humile, Guettarda pohliana, Miconia albicans, Myrcia bella, Myrcia guianensis, Miconia albicans and Siparuna guianensis they were considered shrubs in this study, the others being arboreal, or arboreal/shrub. The families that contributed with greater richness in the cerrado sensu stricto areas were Apocynaceae and Vochysiaceae and in the cerradão areas were Myrtaceae and Rubiaceae. The species that obtained the greatest abundance and highest importance value (VI) in the cerrado sensu stricto areas was Myrcia bella and for the cerradão they were Cheiloclinium cf. cognatum and Guettarda cf. pohliana. Regarding the estimate of total aerial biomass in each phytophysiognomy, we found a higher value for the cerrado sensu stricto (0.90 Mg/ha) and lower values for the cerradão (0.01 Mg/ha). The abundance of species with arboreal habits revealed their stock of seedlings for regeneration in these areas, as this component associated with shrubs is important for the community structure. Although we found, through the estimation of aerial biomass, low values for the two phytophysiognomies studied, they are essential for the community they are located in, as they directly contribute to the carbon stock of the Cerrado in a Conservation Unit.
