RESUMO:

This thesis, included in the concentration area of Studies of Linguistic Processes, within the scope of the research line Study of Processes of Social Practices of Language, of the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Linguistics at the State University of Mato Grosso, University Campus of Cáceres, aims to investigate, analyze and describe, from the perspective of the Theory of Multiliteracies, defended by The New London Group (1996), the way teachers of English language schools in the state education network in the municipality of Tangará da Serra/MT use automatic translators in the classroom. As a theoretical basis, we use precepts defended by Barton and Lee (2015) who discuss online language and teaching-learning practices that emerge and occur electronically. We also dialogue with Arrojo (2007), Rajagopalan (2003), Moita-Lopes (2008) and Pennycook (2001), theorists who discuss the relationship between theory and practice regarding issues of using digital resources. The use of digital translators in foreign language classes has become a common practice due to technological advances and easy access to tools such as Google Translate. However, its pedagogical integration still presents challengesThe problem focuses on understanding how teachers from the Tangará da Serra state network use these tools, evaluating their impacts on the teaching-learning process. This study is justified by the need to improve pedagogical practices that incorporate technologies in a critical and effective way, favoring student learning. The general objective is to investigate the use of digital translators in foreign language classes. Specific objectives include: (1) identifying the most used tools; (2) analyze the pedagogical strategies adopted; (3) evaluate the benefits and limitations perceived by teachers. As hypotheses, it is assumed that the use of digital translators can (a) facilitate the understanding of vocabulary, (b) assist in translating texts, but (c) lacks consistent pedagogical guidance, which may result in dependency or conceptual errors. The methodology addressed in the development of this study is quantitative and interpretive in nature, whose research modality is presented based on a case study. To guide the methodological procedures, we rely on the contributions of different authors: Fonseca (2002), who addresses the foundations of qualitative research; Yin (2001), recognized for his in-depth study of the case as a research strategy; Ventura (2007), which discusses critical data analysis; Gil (2002; 2008), with an emphasis on social research methods and project development; and Paiva (2019), who contributes contemporary reflections on interdisciplinary approaches to research From the collection of data obtained by applying a questionnaire prepared in Google Forms, aimed at a group of seventeen teachers from the basic network, we observed the use of language translation applications and analyzed the use of technological support. We found that the integration of technological supports, such as educational applications and collaborative platforms, has been increasing, although accompanied by challenges related to teacher training and limited school infrastructure
