RESUMO:

This doctoral dissertation in Linguistics, affiliated with the area of concentration Studies of Linguistic Processes and with the research lines Studies of Processes of Variation and Change and Description, Analysis, and Documentation of Indigenous Languages of the Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Linguistics at the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT), is grounded in the principles of Sociolinguistics, in studies on linguistic beliefs and attitudes, and in the assumptions of Educational Sociolinguistics. The study aims to analyze the values attributed, within oral practices and language teaching processes, to the linguistic varieties that circulate in the classroom. It also seeks to understand the linguistic beliefs and attitudes on which Portuguese language teachers base their pedagogical mediation and, more specifically, to interpret which pedagogical and linguistic behaviors guide their actions in the presence of regional and cultural features of the metaplasm of rhotacism in Cuiabano speech. The rhotacism under investigation manifests itself as a distinctive feature of Cuiabano speech, occurring in the substitution of [l] by [r] in contexts such as syllable codas (palma/parma) and consonant clusters (bicicleta/bicicreta), as described by Cox (2009). This phenomenon expresses regional identity values and becomes a sensitive issue in pedagogical mediation when confronted with normative demands and expectations of linguistic appropriateness. The analyses show that linguistic beliefs and attitudes are materialized in behaviors, values, and affects that guide teachers’ pedagogical decisions, oscillating between the naturalization of local variants and corrective intervention. In many cases, features of Cuiabano speech give rise to estrangement, stigmatization, and practices of linguistic prejudice, especially when pedagogical behavior prioritizes standard written language and the preparation of students for the labor market. This scenario reinforces the need to understand linguistic variation as a central component of school practices and to recognize Sociolinguistics as a theoretical foundation for analyzing contextualized language use in its relationship with society. Methodologically, the research is anchored in the assumptions of Labov’s Theory of Variation (2008 [1972]), in the contributions of Bortoni-Ricardo (2001, 2004, 2005) and Bortoni-Ricardo and Almeida (2023), in the studies of Freitag (2009, 2010, 2016), and in the contributions of Zilles and Faraco (2015), Dal Corno et al. (2010), Aguilera (2008), Frosi (2010), Bagno (2007, 2009, 2012), Calvet (2002), Lambert and Lambert (1972), Tarallo (2008), Faraco (2008), Antunes (2007, 2014), and Soares (2023).The data, obtained through interviews and questionnaires administered to six teachers from two schools located in Cuiabá and Várzea Grande, in the Baixada Cuiabana region, indicate that the prevailing view remains that the school curriculum and pedagogical practices lead teachers to intervene, correct, and “improve” speech forms associated with socially marginalized varieties. Even when positive attitudes toward linguistic diversity are observed, the presence of behaviors of complacency, monitoring, and recurrent intervention reveals practices that may contribute to silencing and neglect. Such attitudes reaffirm the centrality attributed to the standard norm in the school context and highlight the tensions between the valorization of local varieties and expectations of formal linguistic appropriateness.
