RESUMO:

This thesis analyzes the syntactic variation of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in the deaf community of Serra Talhada, Pernambuco. Sign language is the language used by the majority of deaf people in daily life. The objective is to analyze the basic order of constituents, specifically the variation between Object-Verb (OV) and Verb-Object (VO) orders. The study is grounded in Functional Linguistics, Variationist Sociolinguistics (Labov, 2008), and Greenberg (1966) to investigate how social factors influence phrasal structure. For the development of this study, the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Labov's (2008) Theory of Variation and Language Change were followed, as well as to discuss the relationships of variation in word order, such as different adjustments of the head parameter, as it intends to analyze the underlying word order in Libras as a part of its sentence structure. This is a quantitative approach. Data from 32 deaf informants were analyzed, stratified by sex, age groups, and education level, using videos from the "Stay at Home" (Fica em Casa) campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic and interviews. The data were subjected to the Mann-Whitney statistical test. The analysis revealed a predominance of variant A (OV order) with 71% of occurrences, against 29% of variant B (VO order). The analysis of social variables demonstrated that sex and education were not determinants for the variation. However, the age group proved to be statistically relevant, with adults and the elderly presenting a higher frequency of the OV order compared to young people. It is concluded that Libras possesses an autonomous linguistic system, moving away from the notion of "signed Portuguese". The OV order, frequently associated with the imperative form and non-manual markers, demonstrates the syntactic complexity of the language.
