RESUMO:

This thesis, part of the research line “Study of Variation and Change Processes” within the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Programme in Linguistics at the State University of Mato Grosso (Unemat), aims to explore the theoretical foundations of linguistic variation and the proposed methodologies in the printed Portuguese language notebooks, which form the structured materials for the state network of Mato Grosso. It also seeks to analyse the articulation between variation skills and linguistic heterogeneity in Portuguese language activities for the 1st year of high school, to ascertain whether the linguistic variation presented in the notebooks aligns with the skills described in the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and the Curricular Reference Document (DRC-MT). Additionally, it seeks to identify the proposal for linguistic variation in High School, based on the structured printed materials made available to students upon their return to face-to-face classes following the pandemic (COVID-19) in 2021. The research adopts a qualitative documentary analysis approach, involving selection, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, based on key concepts from activities proposed for teaching linguistic variation, contained in the structured printed materials that form the documentary corpus of the research, following the methodological definition of Lima Junior, Oliveira, Santos & Schnekenberg (2021); Kripk, Scheller & Bonotto (2015), among others. The research is theoretically grounded in Educational Sociolinguistics, a theoretical-practical area that examines the linguistic varieties spoken by Brazilians, allowing an analysis of the teaching proposal in the school context of Mato Grosso. For this purpose, the research draws on the works of Bortoni-Ricardo (2004, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2021, 2022), Bagno (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017), Brazil (2018, 2022), Calvet (2002), Camacho (2003), Coracini & Cyranka (1999), Faraco (1997, 2007, 2008, 2023), Ilari & Basso (2023), Labov (2006, 2008), Mato Grosso (1998, 2021, 2023), Weinreich, Labov & Herzog (2006), Zilles & Faraco (2015), and other linguists. We understand that addressing linguistic prejudice of any kind requires analysing the materials that underpin pedagogical practice in the classroom, as this extends beyond teaching resources to encompass the understanding that languages are variable, heterogeneous, and sensitive to contexts of use. Thus, teachers must be aware of the speech communities that students belong to and the expressions of identity manifested both individually and collectively in classroom interaction. This sensitivity should be applied both in real speaking contexts and learning contexts. This way, it's possible to foster a more inclusive education that recognises the linguistic and cultural complexities of our society. The results highlight the need for ongoing training for Portuguese language teachers in Sociolinguistics, to value the linguistic variation students already master and to enable the study of other variations that involve literacy and language use in different communicative situations.
