RESUMO:
The research entitled Challenges of Remote Education: Retention of Academics at the UNEMAT Cáceres Campus During
the COVID-19 Pandemic was presented to the Postgraduate Program in Education (PPGEdu) at the State University
of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT), within the line of research Teacher Training, Pedagogical Policies and Practices, and is
correlated to the Research Group on Access and Permanence in Higher Education (GPAPES) of same university. The
main objective of the research was to analyze the effects of emergency remote teaching and its repercussions on
the retention of undergraduate students at UNEMAT, in addition to investigating the main factors that impacted the
academic trajectory of these students during this specific period of health crisis. The methodology adopted for this
study was a quanti-quali approach (quantitative and qualitative), supported by the epistemological assumptions of
the critical-dialectic approach, as described by Gamboa (2007). For data collection, a questionnaire was used
consisting of 36 questions, 2 open questions and 34 closed questions. The questions addressed three main axes:
the students' socioeconomic profile, their academic profile and their experience with emergency remote teaching.
The questionnaire was applied to 168 students who, during the research period, were detained at the institution.
The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an unprecedented reconfiguration of global academic operations. Higher
education institutions around the world have been forced to quickly adapt to new realities, such as mobility
restrictions, social distancing measures and the mandatory migration to remote learning. This abrupt transition
profoundly altered the way knowledge was transmitted and acquired, in addition to exposing significant inequalities
in technological infrastructure and the ability of educational institutions to respond to large-scale crises. The
research, therefore, seeks to understand how these changes impacted the retention and performance of students,
considering the specific conditions of the UNEMAT Cáceres Campus, and the challenges that these students faced
to remain enrolled and progress in their training during a period of uncertainty and adaptation.
