PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH OF STUDENTS AT THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF MATO GROSSO - UNEMAT
Mental Health; University students; Anxiety; Depression
Mental health, according to the WHO, is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being that allows individuals to cope with daily stress and achieve their goals. In recent years, the mental health of health science students has been widely discussed. A 2017 study with Health Sciences students from UNEMAT in Cáceres/MT revealed a high prevalence of anxiety (45.3%) and symptoms indicative of depression at 20.6%. Thus, the research aims to identify the prevalence and factors associated with mental distress among undergraduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FACIS) at the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT) Cáceres-MT campus from an educational perspective. This is a non-controlled prospective cohort study with a quantitative-qualitative approach, conducted from 2023 to 2024, with university students from the first three semesters of Health Sciences courses at UNEMAT. The sample consisted of 117 students aged between 17 and 40 years. The table shows a predominance of females (68.97%), predominantly cisgender women (67.24%), students under 20 years old (21.21%), of mixed race (46.55%), most of whom were single and childless (89.66% and 91.38%, respectively), with an average family income of 2.65 minimum wages (38.79%). In the first semester, about 43.10% of the students felt sad, 81.03% were nervous or worried, 49.14% had trouble sleeping, 59.48% had difficulties making decisions, and 37.07% lost interest in things. The mental health of students, especially those in the health field, has become an increasing concern due to the high prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms. Many students face significant stress during their studies, showing signs of sadness, nervousness, insomnia, difficulty making decisions, and loss of interest in daily activities. Factors such as academic pressure, lack of time for leisure, and emotional demands in the university environment contribute to the increase in mental distress, affecting students' well-being and academic performance.
