 The Legal Amazon has received special protection throughout Brazil's history, as recorded in the 1946 Constitution, in its article 199, which mandates the Brazilian State to promote the development of the Amazon region. This region, initially called the Brazilian Amazon, was later renamed the Legal Amazon. The objective of this thesis is to present the hypothesis of whether or not there is an influence of normative changes, where legislative evolution and decrees and legal norms can affect deforestation rates in the region, based on cartographic data from the National Institute for Space Research – INPE, through the survey of deforestation in the Legal Amazon from 1988 to 2023. The methodology used in this work was the hypothetic-deductive method, formulating hypotheses and conducting quantitative comparison tests correlating with deforestation rates in the Legal Amazon. A greater correlation in the reduction of deforestation in the Amazon region with legislative or normative changes was observed when changes were made by decree no. 5523 of 2005 and decree no. 6514 of 2008, and the entry into force of the New Forest Code of 2012, when in 2012, the lowest deforestation rate in the period from 1988 to 2023 was noted. In the State of Mato Grosso, there is a correlation in the year 2008 with decree no. 6514 of 2008 and in 2012 with the New Forest Code, as well as a notable correlation in the year 2022, when Bill - PL no. 337/2022, sought to remove the State of Mato Grosso from the Legal Amazon.
