RESUMO:

Morality is neither a natural nor a transcendent given, but a historical and social fact whose transformations accompany changes in the modes of production and in social relations; ethics, the philosophical discipline that takes morality as its object, investigates its origins, values and contradictions. This research examines how the moral codes forged within capitalism and by colonialism turned both labor and the environment into instruments of profit, and how environmental ethics, formulated from the 1960s onward, proposes another direction for human moral conduct. The aim is to analyze the extent to which the practices of the collectors of the RSPA (Portal da Amazônia Seed Network), in northern Mato Grosso, concretely realize principles of environmental ethics, in opposition to the pattern of regional occupation inherited from the historical process. From the perspective of historical materialism, a qualitative approach was adopted, combining bibliographic research in moral philosophy, socioeconomic history and environmental ethics with semi-structured interviews in a focus group with the RSPA management and individual interviews with collectors, subsequently categorized and analyzed. The results indicate that the conditions imposed by the process of migration and occupation of northern Mato Grosso marked by land conflicts, the expulsion of indigenous peoples and environmental degradation produced a specific form of relationship with nature, in which the forest came to be seen as an obstacle to be overcome: felling was a condition of access to land and of the family’s survival, and not a deliberate choice. Along their trajectories, in the attempt to overcome the challenges imposed by that form of relationship and by the advance of large-scale crops, the farmers developed strategies anchored in their own history and identity. It is in this context that, in 2010, the Sementes do Portal project, funded by the Amazon Fund, intervened, and that the RSPA was subsequently constituted as a cooperative in 2016. The RSPA yields, as its outcome, the mediation of the construction of a new perception of nature, creating effective conditions for people to think and behave differently in their conduct toward the environment. This mediation, however, does not occur in a vacuum, but in the light of the conflicts that emerge from the advance of agribusiness. It is concluded that the experience analyzed goes beyond the strictly economic dimension and constitutes an alternative and emergent moral practice, which articulates biodiversity conservation, the restoration of degraded areas through agroforestry systems, income generation and the strengthening of community relations, approaching the biocentric and ecocentric strands of environmental ethics and the notion of socio-ecological resilience.
