RESUMO:

The sour passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) stands out in Brazilian tropical fruit farming, accounting for approximately 95% of the national passion fruit production. However, its cultivation is severely affected by soilborne diseases, such as collar rot, often associated with Fusarium solani, and vascular fusariosis, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae. These diseases compromise the root system and the base of the stem, reduce orchard longevity, and cause significant losses in both yield and fruit quality. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the performance of the interspecific hybrid (IH) UNEMAT124 as a rootstock, due to its resistance to collar rot, and to conduct resistance tests against fusariosis. Additionally, the study seeks to indicate a new rootstock cultivar adapted to the conditions of orchards in the state of Mato Grosso, with the goal of validating the use of interspecific hybrids as a sustainable strategy for managing soilborne pathogens. The UNEMAT124 hybrid results from the cross between P. edulis and the wild species P. nitida. Two experiments were conducted: I) The agronomic performance of UNEMAT124 as a rootstock was evaluated in the field using a randomized complete block design with five blocks and four treatments: UNEMAT124 grafted with BRS Sol do Cerrado (seed-propagated); UNEMAT124 grafted with BRS Sol do Cerrado (cutting-propagated); Control: BRS Sol do Cerrado (seed-propagated); and Control: BRS Sol do Cerrado (cutting-propagated), with three plants per plot. Grafting was performed using the cleft grafting technique. A total of 28 morpho-agronomic descriptors and yield (kg/ha) were assessed, aiming to meet the criteria of Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) and Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) as required by the Ministério da Agricultura e Pecuária (MAPA) for passion fruit cultivar registration and protection. II) For fusariosis resistance evaluation, the experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using a randomized complete block design in a 2×2×2 factorial scheme, with three replications and four plants per plot. The factors included two genotypes (UNEMAT124 and P. edulis), two inoculation methods (immersion of washed roots in a conidial suspension [1×10⁶ conidia/mL] for 24 hours followed by maintenance in Clark's nutrient solution replaced every three days, and immersion followed by transplanting to commercial substrate), and two conditions (inoculated and non-inoculated). Plants propagated by cuttings were inoculated with isolate FO 22 of F. oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae, selected for its high aggressiveness. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, and means were compared using Tukey's test at 5% significance, with the aid of the Genes software. The results demonstrated that UNEMAT124 showed greater tolerance to fusariosis compared to P. edulis, and that the root immersion method ensured greater uniformity of infection, proving more effective in discriminating between resistant and susceptible genotypes. Based on the results obtained so far, it can be concluded that the interspecific hybrid UNEMAT124 shows promising potential as a rootstock for sour passion fruit, combining desirable agronomic traits with resistance to soilborne pathogens, particularly fusariosis and collar rot. Its validation may represent a sustainable alternative for cultivation in endemic areas, contributing to increased orchard longevity and productivity. These findings reinforce the importance of plant breeding in the search for efficient and environmentally responsible phytosanitary solutions.
