Innovation is a fundamental element for the advancement of scientific knowledge and for socioeconomic development. In this context, universities play a strategic role in the generation and dissemination of knowledge, as well as in the training of qualified human resources. However, in Brazil, there is a discrepancy between the scientific production of higher education institutions and the generation of intellectual property assets, a scenario frequently associated with the limited dissemination of a culture of innovation in the academic environment. Given this reality, this dissertation aimed to identify the innovation potential of research projects in the areas of agricultural sciences and health sciences at the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT), Sinop campus, with a view to contributing to the strengthening of intellectual property protection and technology transfer at the institution. The study was based on the concept of innovation and the guidelines of the Oslo Manual. 288 projects registered in the Research Project Management System (SGPP) of UFMT between 2019 and 2023 were analyzed, with 183 from the area of agricultural sciences and 105 from the area of health sciences. The evaluation of innovation potential considered criteria defined in the literature and the classification of projects according to the technological maturity levels of the Technology Readiness Levels/Manufacturing Readiness Levels (TRL/MRL) methodology. The results indicated that most projects have low innovation potential and are concentrated in early stages of technological development. As a practical contribution, a web tool was proposed for the identification and classification of the innovative potential of the institution's research projects.
