RESUMO:

Innovation is a crucial factor for the advancement of knowledge and socioeconomic development. Universities, secular institutions fundamental to the development of humanity, not only offer formal education to their students but also produce and disseminate knowledge through studies, research projects, laboratories, research groups, and postgraduate programs, which generate innovations. One way to protect these innovations is through Intellectual Property (IP). In this context, this project aims to identify the innovation potential of research projects in the areas of agricultural and health sciences at the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT), Sinop/MT campus, with the goal of increasing the intellectual property protection of research developed at the institution. This research defined project evaluation criteria based on literature, institutional regulations, and the Oslo Manual. A quantitative approach was applied, using a 6-point scale to measure and evaluate the abstracts of research projects submitted to the Research Project Management System (SGPP)/UFMT platform and applying Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) to identify the maturity level of the analyzed projects. The analysis of 183 projects in the agricultural sciences area and 105 in the health sciences area at UFMT-Sinop (2019-2023) revealed that the majority, 75% in agricultural sciences and 71% in health sciences, have low to zero innovation potential. In agricultural sciences, the lack of external funding is critical, with 84.7% of projects depending on internal resources, which is reflected in the low technological maturity, where 54.6% of the research is at the most basic level of development (TRL 1). Similarly, the health sector demonstrated low scientific originality, with 69.5% of projects lacking innovative potential, and in both areas, collaboration with companies and the potential to generate intellectual property are incipient. Despite the significant number of research projects, most are concentrated in early stages of development with low potential for effective innovation. The strong dependence on internal resources and limited collaboration with the productive and governmental sectors are critical barriers that limit technology transfer and the socioeconomic impact of research.
